The National Rail Museum is one of the most prominent museums in the history of India. This beautiful national rail museum is located in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. This rail museum possesses and features the history of rail transport in India. The national Rail museum is spread in 10 acres (40,000 m) and it was inaugurated as the Rail Transport Museum on 1 February 1977. The Rail museum is open every day for tourists and local visitors except Mondays and national holidays.

There are many amazing things in the museum’s vast galleries like Diesel simulator, Coach Simulator, 1:8 scale trail, Steam simulator, and many things like these. The concept of build a transport museum was proposed in 1962 under the advisory of rail enthusiast Michael Graham Satow.

The construction of this National rail museum was started in 1970 and the foundation stone for the National Rail Museum was laid by the then President of India V. V. Giri. The rail museum was inaugurated as its initial name Rail Transport Museum in 1977 by Kamalapati Tripathi, who was the railway minister during that time.

National rail museum was likely to be a part of a large museum that displays the history of roadways, airways, waterways, railways in India but it never happened and Later in 1995, the name of the museum was changed to the National Rail Museum.

There is a toy train ride around the site and visiter are allowed to do a toy ride to visit the site. The main exhibits of the national rail museums are Fairy Queen which was the world’s oldest operational steam locomotive, Patiala State Monorail Trainways which was a unique steam monorail, Morris Fire Engine, Saloon of The Prince of Wales, Saloon of Maharaja of Mysore, Saloon of The Maharaja of Indore, Electric locomotive 4502, and many other amazing historical transport which are preserved in the National Rail Museum.

The museum is open every day except on Mondays and National Holidays from 09:30 am to 05:30 pm for visitors. There is a fee of 20 rupees per person to do the toy train ride. As the museum of historical transport of India makes this place one of the best places to visit in Delhi in summer.
